Local iwi members in Hamilton have blessed a property in the city where a piece of human bone was discovered earlier this week.

Police say the bone was recovered from a dirt bank during excavation work on the Beerescourt property.

They say it was initially thought to be animal bone but a pathologist has identified it as a human thighbone bone somewhere between 20 and 100 years old.

Police say there are no reports of missing people or unaccounted-for-bodies that could be directly linked to the find.

They also say there are no known Maori burial sites in the area.

The owner of the property, Sarah Nathan, says kaumatua who came to her home on Thursday morning provided a beautiful blessing of the site.
