6:46 am on 23 April 2012

A series of hui is underway around the country to test opinion on planned changes to the Emissions Trading Scheme.

A consultation paper urges the 2015 deadline for bringing agriculture into the ETS be delayed by up to three years with the Government planning to review the deadline in two years.

With treaty settlements often including forestry holdings, iwi have a vested interest in the scheme.

Guy Beatson from the Ministry for the Environment says the hui are to find out what effect the proposed changes might have on iwi.

He says submissions on the consultation document close on 11 May.

Mr Beatson says the submissions will then be analysed and advice given to the Government.

The first of the 10 hui was on 17 April and the final hui will be in Napier on Tuesday.
