Ngati Manuhiri want their Treaty settlement deed to become law

8:26 am on 24 April 2012

A delegation of Ngati Manuhiri people has appealed to MPs to allow their Treaty Settlement Deed to become law.

They made submissions to the Maori Affairs select committee, which on Monday sat in Leigh, north of Auckland.

The politicians also heard feedback from a roopu from the wider iwi, Ngati Wai - who argued Hauturu-Little Barrier Island should not be part of Ngati Manuhiri's Crown redress.

The Ngati Wai people say they also lay claim to the island, but are being trampled on by the Crown, which is choosing to deal just with Ngati Manuhiri.

The komiti will now asses the submissions before compiling a report on the arguments.
