Campaign to save native wood pigeon

Conservationists in Northland have launched a campaign to save the native wood pigeon.

The Northland Conservation Board is worried about the kukupa, which being illegally hunted in local forests.

Board chair Mita Harris is calling on Taitokerau iwi and hapu to help in their strategy to stop what it calls the "free for all" hunting of the protected species.

He says because of financial restraints, the board is using a brochure it published more than 10 years ago to hopefully get people talking about it.

Mr Mita says the board is re-releasing a pamphlet to schools, community organisations and marae to make them aware of their campaign.

He says about 15 years ago, the Conservation Department employed someone to travel throughout Northland and talk to people about protecting the kukupa, but it does not have that kind of money any more.
