Council trims $150,000 from Maori board funding

An Auckland Council committee says it will give the board set up to represent Maori in the region just over $3 million funding for the next year.

Levels of financial support for the council's Independent Maori Statutory Board have been controversial, with councillors last year slashing its original budget by nearly half.

On Thursday councillors were split 12 votes to 7 over the decision to provide the board with $3.1 million to operate over the next year.

That is about $150,000 less than it received last year.

Statutory board chair David Taipari says that amount is adequate and his group can work within the budget.

The funding agreement will be formally adopted by the full council at the end of June.
