The Independent Maori Statutory Board is giving Auckland Council more time to find $295.23 million for Maori projects.
The Board says while it is sticking to that figure, it is now prepared to wait a year for the council and its organisations to report on how much is already being spent on Maori throughout the region.
It had previously considered seeking a judicial review if the money was not part of the 10-year long term plan due to be signed off by councillors within a month.
Boad chairman David Taipari says it would have been very lucky to have got the funding because the council does not know how much it is currently investing in Maori.
He says there is now a system in place tracking Maori spending which is reported to the accountability and performance committee.
Mr Taipari says the board will be able to use that information to highlight what money still needs to be spent on Maori.
The Independent Maori Statutory Board says spending on Maori, as part of the 10-year budget, should go towards projects such as marae development and housing on ancestral land.
