Rangatahi Court an option for Christchurch

6:43 am on 25 June 2012

The Government is not ruling out setting up a Rangatahi Court in Christchurch.

The Ministry of Justice is to open a mainstream youth court on Nga Hau e Wha marae in the city by the end of the year.

The temporary facility is being set up following earthquake damage to other judicial buildings.

But Courts Minister Chester Borrows says a Rangatahi Court for Canterbury isn't out of the question.

He says there is a call to spread the number of Rangatahi courts, and where possible the Government will investigate an expansion.

Te Kooti Rangatahi (Rangatahi Courts) are for young Maori and their whanau to address the offending in their own cultural environment.

They already operate in several areas, including Gisborne and Auckland.
