Research institute forges links with iwi

The deputy director of Te Kotahi Research Institute in Hamilton says staff are making a real effort to develop relationships with iwi.

One of the stated aims of the centre for indigenous research at Waikato University, which opened last October, is to improve the contribution of university research to iwi development.

Maui Hudson says the director has just visited the East Coast and northern Hawke's Bay to find out what research needs iwi have and assistance the Institute can provide.

He says meeting with iwi representatives provides the chance to discuss how to link them up with research the institute has already completed and what opportunities there are for new research.

Mr Hudson says the Institute is also providing feedback about the number of students at the university, who affiliate to a particular iwi.
