Massey University's new assistant vice-chancellor Maori and Pasifika, says he plans to be a strong advocate, facilitator and champion for academic success by Maori and Pacific Island students.
Selwyn Katene, who until recently headed the Massey led inter-university Maori academy, will take over the role next month from Sir Mason Durie.
He says he's humbled and excited about the appointment, and having the opportunity to carry on the leadership work of Sir Mason Durie who set such high standards.
Mr Katene says he wants to concentrate on building leadership capability, but it's not possible without community support.
He says he wants to continue the engagement with iwi and hapu that Sir Mason began.
Mr Katene says he also wants to work closely with communities in Palmerston North, Wellington, and Albany north of Auckland, where Massey University has campuses.
He says he wants to concentrate on building leadership within Massey's Maori and Pasifika academic community and says he's committed to quality research, teaching and learning.
Dr Katene says leading the way as a facilitator, advocate and champion for Maori and Pacific Island students will be a humbling but rewarding experience.
Vice-chancellor Steve Maharey says Dr Katene has a strong public policy and strategic planning background, mainly in the field of Maori development, which includes research interests in health, history and academic leadership.
