Questions over ANZ National's te reo Maori policy

7:48 pm on 27 July 2012

ANZ National is being urged to increase its signage in te reo Maori.

Several people have told Te Manu Korihi that an ANZ branch in Kirikiriroa (Hamilton) welcomes customers in English and a foreign language - but fails to extend that greeting in Maori.

Our reporter in the city has also visited the bank on Ward Street and confirmed there is no signage in te reo Maori.

A member of the Waikato hapu Ngati Te Mihinga, Gareth Seymour, says ANZ National should step up and embrace Maori Language Week - Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori.

In response, ANZ National has indicated there is no policy to have signage in Maori nationwide.

A spokesperson says it is supporting Maori Language Week, and a lot of branches around the country are displaying signage in Maori.

He says it is also running a series of educational articles for staff to further raise awareness and knowledge of te reo.
