MoU expected to help improve Kaipara Harbour

A Northland hapu, Te Uri o Hau, expects that a new memorandum of understanding or MoU signed with the Northland Regional Council will benefit efforts to improve the health of the Kaipara Harbour.

The MoU updates one to which both parties agreed following a recommendation from the Office of Treaty Settlements in 2003.

Te Uri o Hau chief executive Deborah Harding says it will provide a range of benefits for Maori, the council and the wider Kaipara community.

She says she feels that there's a lot more integrity and commitment from both the council and Maori to work together to restore the mauri of the harbour.

Ms Harding says the two Kaipara hapu have a very good holistic approach to all the kaimoana in the harbour.

The regional council's chief executive, Malcolm Nicolson, says improving the health of the harbour is high on its agenda.
