A Ngati Tuwharetoa hapu is commending government agencies that have been monitoring volcanic activity on Mt Tongariro.

The eruption before midnight on 6 August caused some people to leave their homes near the base of the mountain.

But a spokesperson for Te Runanga o Ngati Hikairo ki Tongariro, Bub Smith, says the event has created good relationships between the hapu and government agencies.

He says GNS Science has been very supportive, providing information to the hapu both before and after the eruption.

Mr Smith says scientists have helped Ngati Hikairo understand the data collected from the volcano, which has strengthened links between them.

He says the hapu also have good relationships with the Department of Conservation, police and Civil Defence.
