New scholarship launched to encourage Maori into fishing

7:15 pm on 12 September 2012

A scholarship to encourage Maori into the fishing industry has been launched by the fishing company, Sanford's and the Iwi Collective Partnership.

The iwi collective is made up of 12 North Island iwi with fish quota gained in the 2004 Treaty of Waitangi fisheries settlement.

Two places on Sanford fishing vessels will be offered this year for anyone from any of the 12 iwi.

Iwi Collective manager Maru Samuels says the scholarship is about encouraging interest in the industry, which could lead to full-time work.

He says the only requirements are being over 18 and being fit and healthy.

Mr Maru says there is no need for any qualification but applicants must have the right attitude.
