Nod to Maori history in new blue penguin experience

Traditional Maori land is about to become home to a blue penguin tourism venture near Dunedin.

Blue Penguins Pukekura is due to open next month at Pilot's Beach at Taiaroa Head.

The Department of Conservation has given its approval for 100 people to be taken to watch the penguins every evening of the week - and adults would be charged $20.

Blue Penguins Pukekura director of operations Hoani Langsbury says visitors will also learn about the history of the local land.

He says they will be taken to a boardwalk, where a pou (carved post) will acknowledge the mana of the Korako Karetai whanau - whose whenua the new tourism venture is on.
