A hikoi in which young Ngai Tahu descendants traversed Southland helped spread the tribe's history among its people, says one of the organisers.
About 20 school students aged between 15 and 17 from all over New Zealand took part in the walk, which began on Friday and finished on Monday.
A group of the tribe's university students organised the event, which consisted mostly of Outward Bound-style activities.
One of the facilitators, Tawini White, says the journey was about bring whanauka (whanaunga or relatives) together.
She says it was also about sharing Maori history and culture with rakatahi (rangatahi or young people), so they don't need to rely on a small number of people for information.
Ms White says the hikoi is another step forward for the iwi.
