8:30 pm on 8 October 2012

The Maori King, Tuheitia, has commemorated the coronation of his late grandfather 79 years ago with a waka procession on the Waikato River.

King Koroki, the fifth Maori King, was crowned on 8 October 1933.

His grandson, Kingi Tuheitia, was aboard one of the three main canoes which travelled from Turangawaewae Marae in Ngaruawahia on Monday to Waahi Marae in Huntly for the annual pa hui with Kingi Tuheitia.

Senior Maori, including Dame Iritana Tawhiwhirangi and a co-leader of the Maori council Sir Eddie Durie, attended the hui.
