Water rights debate contributes to resignation

A senior Waikato-Tainui leader, who's resigned from Mighty River Power, says her decision to leave was made after considering what's happening with the Maori water rights debate.

The state-owned electricity company announced on Thursday that Parekawhia McLean, was stepping down as an independent director.

Mighty River Power's finances are based on free water running through its turbines. A propriety interest in water which Waikato-Tainui and other tribes are pursuing could jeopardise that.

Ms McLean who's also the chief executive of the Waikato-Tainui tribal parliament, Te Kauhanganui, says she considered the Government's plan to sell shares in state owned assets such as Mighty River Power, before deciding to resign.

She says she had a professional responsibility as part of Mighty River and Te Kauhanganui to make a decision.
