Bay of Plenty iwi have told the Tauranga District Court they are still grieving for their moana which was significantly affected by the container ship Rena running aground last year.

The company that owns the Rena, Daina, has been fined $300,000 for discharging a harmful substance into the coastal environment.

The Rena ran aground off the Tauranga coast on 5 October 2011 spilling containers and oil into the sea and causing one of the country's worst environmental disasters.

A victim impact statement from the combined iwi leaders group written by the group's chair, Te Awanui Black, was read to the court by Ngaraima Taingahue.

She told the court the event is still not over for iwi, not all kaimoana is safe to eat and the environmental impact on the reef is still unknown.
