Traditional philosophy will return - teacher

8:45 pm on 27 October 2012

A kohanga reo teacher is confident the traditional philosophy of Maori pre-schools, where te reo is passed on from elders to children, will be reinstated following a Waitangi Tribunal report.

The Kohanga Reo National Trust Board has started its national tour to meet with kohanga to talk them about the report findings.

Among recommendations, the report suggests the Crown say sorry for severe prejudice suffered by kohanga through early childhood policies.

The trust was in eastern Bay of Plenty on Friday.

A kohanga reo kaiako at Taahuna Kohanga, Te Poono Te Poono, says he's certain the Government will implement the tribunal's suggestions, thanks to the people on the trust board.

Mr Te Poono says Maori preschools will return to their traditional philosophy. It may not happen tomorrow, he says, but the journey to get there has already started.
