Under-achievement insight important - kura

A national body representing many kura kaupapa says an Education Ministry message that's angered some mainstream groups of principals and teachers is vital to lifting the results from under-performing students.

Education Secretary Lesley Longstone says the education system is not yet world class because of the under achievement of Maori and Pasifika children and those from poor families.

The Post Primary Teachers Association says her comment is creating a sense of crisis that makes it easier to introduce policies such as charter schools.

But the head of Te Runanga Nui o Nga Kura Kaupapa Maori o Aotearoa, Toni Waho says Mrs Longstone's message is an important one and work to address underachievement needs to be faced.

Mr Waho is convinced Mrs Longstone's message will further prompt the Education Minister, Hekia Parata, to look at how to better provide education for Maori and Pasifika students
