Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Maori, the Maori Language Commission, has allocated grants totalling $1.34 million to support the promotion of te reo.

The grants will go to 47 groups around the country from about 170 applications.

Commission chief executive Glenis Philip-Barbara says there's a wide range and variety of work being done to promote and grow the language among community and whanau groups.

She says the groups are actively engaged in either creating resources, opportunities to learn and events to promote te reo Maori.

Ms Philip-Barbara says none of the grant recipients are schools whose core business is language training.

She says the grant process is highly competitive.
