Kaitaia GP celebrates autonomy

10:37 pm on 19 November 2012

Kaitaia GP Lance O'Sullivan says he's now happy to have the freedom to improve the health of the impoverished community in the Far North at his new independent practice.

Dr O'Sullivan, who affiliates to Muriwhenua (the Far North) through his Te Rarawa and Ngapuhi whakapapa, has set up his Te Kohanga Whakaora (The Wellness Nest) surgery at Kaitaia Hospital.

He resigned from Te Hauora o Te Hiku o Te Ika after being warned not to make house-calls or treat people who couldn't pay.

Dr O'Sullivan says he's nervous and thrilled at the same time about the positive differences he can make.

He says he's energised and excited about the possibilities that occur, and the fact that he now has the autonomy to do the things he's been talking about for so long.

Although he won't turn down patients who can't pay, he says he isn't offering a free clinic.

He says he will be giving people payment options that work with their budget, and his fees will be much cheaper than other health clinics.
