Radio Ngati Porou scoops sports media award

3:23 pm on 26 November 2012

This year's Maori Sports Media Award has been won by Radio Ngati Porou for its coverage of East Coast club rugby competition games and finals.

The broadcaster draws in listeners from its rohe throughout the country, and also has fans tuning in online from Australia, America, Afghanistan, Iceland and Cambodia.

Commentator Albie Gibson says they didn't set out to win an award, but to bring the games to the people.

He says the station is humbled by the recognition.

Announcer Kahu Waitoa says the award means a lot, but it's all about the rugby.

He says without the rugby players, they can't do a commentary, and he pays tribute to Ngati Porou East Coast for winning the Meads Cup and giving the radio station an exciting final to commentate on.
