New Murupara school board petitioned about school name

9:11 pm on 4 December 2012

A petition objecting to how a name for the new Murupara area school was selected has been delivered to the board charged with setting it up.

At least 80 people signed the petition, led by Rangi Anderson.

He says the name, Te Awatea o Murupara, was chosen by the Establishment Board of Trustees, submitted by one influential person at the last minute, and was not subject to community consultation.

But the chairperson of the Establishment Board of Trustees, Jacob Te Kurapa, disputes the comments, and says consultation on a name has been happening since 2008.

He says in that time 22 names, including Murupara Collegiate, were suggested.

Mr Te Kurapa believes the name Murupara Collegiate wouldn't be accepted by the Ministry of Education because the school will cater not only to secondary pupils but to primary school students as well.

He says the name Te Awatea o Murupara has already been endorsed by the Ministry of Education.

Mr Te Kurapa says his board will give the petition due consideration.

He says if the board returns to consultation it could cause delays opening the new school at the beginning of the school year.
