Kaitaia doctor joins anti-child abuse push

A family GP in Northland has become part of a drive to tackle child abuse and domestic violence.

Lance O'Sullivan has joined a group of experts on the Glenn Inquiry, founded by the wealthy businessman and philanthropist Sir Owen Glenn.

Dr O'Sullivan, of Te Rarawa, Ngati Hau and Ngati Maru, practises and lives in Kaitaia.

He says any strategy has to involve the communities and be culturally appropriate.

He says there's no value in bureaucrats developing policies in Wellington and rolling them out to Kaitaia - because the town won't have a hand in developing ways to deal with child abuse and domestic violence.

Dr O'Sullivan says the inquiry is desperately needed.
