Indecision over Waitangi day flag

7:01 am on 30 January 2013

Te Arawa tribes in Rotorua have failed to choose a Maori flag to fly alongside the New Zealand one on Waitangi Day.

The iwi have been considering the idea since 2011 following a suggestion by the city council's Te Arawa standing committee.

In October that year, it appeared that a hui-ā-iwi voted to fly the Tino Rangatiratanga flag.

Some iwi members weren't happy with that and instead wanted a tribal flag.

Rotorua District Council deputy mayor Trevor Maxwell, says the council is still waiting to hear back from Maori.

He says he would be happy to see the Tino Rangatiratanga flag flown alongside the New Zealand flag, but iwi remain divided on that idea.

Mr Maxwell says the iwi haven't made a decision yet and he worries that closer to Waitangi Day the council is going to be blamed for the indecision.
