The Hone Tuwhare Trust says plans to restore a crib at Kaka Point in South Otago which was home to New Zealand's most celebrated Maori poet for over 16 years have entered an exciting phase.
Following Hone Tuwhare's death in 2008 a trust formed to promote his legacy began raising funds to buy and restore the crib to make it available as a writer's residence.
Trust chairman Matt Shirtcliffe says since Auckland-based Takutai Trust agreed to buy the property a year ago there has been a concerted effort to move the project along.
He says the latest development is a set of working drawings which a prominent Auckland architect has prepared.
Mr Shirtcliffe says they include restoring the crib to its original condition and building a new residence on the property which will be able to accommodate the writer in residence, his or her whanau and visitors who may want to stay overnight.
