Crown takes control of Maori boarding school

A Maori boarding school has been put under temporary Crown control.

The Ministry of Education has put a limited statutory manager into Turakina Maori Girls College in Marton in the Rangitikei district, to help the board of trustees with the running of the school.

The move follows an Education Review Office report which recommended that the Secretary of Education assist the board to improve its understanding of governance.

College principal Terehia Channings said she welcomes the support, which will help the school make progress.

Some improvements had been made before the Education Review Office report was published.

Ms Channings said a new board of trustees is bedding in.

She said every boarding school in the country has difficulty finding parents who are willing to join boards of trustees.
