Te Arawa tribal parliament could be set up by May

6:36 am on 7 March 2013

A body similar to a tribal parliament could be set up in Te Arawa within the next two months.

The idea has been discussed for many years, but the idea gained momentum early last year.

Te Arawa groups in Bay of Plenty are looking at establishing a structure which would unite descendants and build on achievements by iwi organisations involved in areas such as business and fisheries.

Te Arawa Lakes Trust chairperson Toby Curtis said a decision about how to set up the structure has been made.

He said a number of models have been looked at, and from that - progress will be reported back to the people.

Mr Curtis said if the people approve the report then the tribe should be able to start operating the new structure by May at the latest.

A hui to inform the tribe about progress is being held next week.
