Oral history project wanted for Moutoa Garden occupation

11:33 am on 7 March 2013

Protesters, police and others who were part of the 79 day occupation of Moutoa Gardens in Whanganui nearly 20 years ago will soon be reliving the event.

A community group plans to interview a wide range of those who were involved in the 1995 protest, that saw Maori lay claim to the land they called Pakaitore.

The group wants to interview a range of people, including members of churches, the council, the media and those who lived nearby - before the occupation's twentieth anniversary in February 2015.

Oral historian Jillian Wychel said it's important to get everybody's views on record, as many of the elders who were involved have died.

The Alexander Turnbull Library is on board, and will begin training the 14 interviewers later this month.

Ken Mair, who took part in the occupation, said it's exciting, especially coming up to the occupation's twentieth anniversary, in 2015.

He said it's important these memories are taken down as many elders who were involved have already died.
