A blue penguin tourism venture set up on traditional Maori land in Dunedin is celebrating a successful first season.

The Blue Penguin Pukekura experience showcases the hundreds of penguins at Takihauru or Pilot's Beach.

It opened last October and director of operations Hoani Langsbury says more than $100,000 has been raised since.

The money goes towards protecting the penguins from predators

Mr Langsbury says the success of the venture is due to its cultural values.

Visitors are greeted with a whaikorero and learn about the history of the land which, he says, makes people feel more involved and connected to the project.
