Hui opposes Rotorua expressway

A hui has been held in Rotorua to oppose a new expressway.

The Rotorua Eastern Arterial will run from the city airport, close to the edge of Lake Rotorua, towards Sala Street.

The Transport Agency says the new road could affect the lake's water quality.

A hui at Hurunga Te Rangi Marae during the weekend attracted 140 people, including hapu members of Ngati Hurunga Te Rangi, Te Roro o te Rangi and Ngati Uenukukopako.

A facilitator of the hui, Hera Naera, says legal options were discussed, along with ways of letting people know what impact the new road will have on marae in the area.

She says the expressway could lead to the removal of trees that block road pollution from affecting Owhata and Hurunga Te Rangi Marae.
