The chief executive of Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporation has put her name forward as a Labour Party candidate for the Ikaroa-Rawhiti electoral race.

The upcoming by-election will be held on June 29.

Meka Whaitiri has confirmed she's seeking selection on behalf of the Labour Party.

She's held the position of Ngati Kahungunu chief executive since 2009 and before that, she worked as a public servant, including working as a senior advisor in the office of the Minister of Maori Affairs.

Ms Whaitiri says she has dedicated her life to one of service and sees her nomination as the next step on the road to her giving back to her whanau, hapu and iwi in the electorate.

She says Parekura Horomia has left big shoes to fill.

Ms Whaitiri says she cannot be Mr Horomia, but she can promise that she will serve the people of the electorate.
