Remote settlements get wi-fi with iwi and council help

8:53 am on 6 June 2013

Several marae along the isolated Whanganui River Road now have access to wireless internet.

The wi-fi access stretches to the settlement of Pipiriki, 80 kilometres from the city.

Whanganui mayor Annette Main says the river road is very isolated and challenging, and there is no cell phone service, so the wifi connection will improve safety.

Ms Main says the connection was set up through a collaboration of the Atihaunui Whanganui and the Morikaunui Incorporations.

She says iwi, council and locals in the farming and tourism sectors worked with internet service provider Inspire Net.

Ms Main says visitors on the scenic river route will be able to quickly post photos online, which will help promote the region.
