Maori Affairs Minister challenged in Parliament

6:04 am on 7 June 2013

The Labour MP for Te Tai Tonga has used Parliament's question time to challenge Maori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples - asking what he's done for vulnerable whanau.

Rino Tirikatene asked how Dr Sharples is making gains when Maori have gone backwards under his watch

on every major statistic that matters, including income, jobs, housing and well-being.

Dr Sharples rejected Mr Tirikatene's statement and said that Maori were succeeding.

He said the Maori Party and the Government managed to secure $1 billion for Maori in this year's budget, and demanded to know what Labour has done.
