National Standards results show students at Maori-medium schools perform better at reading and writing than Maori students in mainstream education.

Education Minister Hekia Parata on Tuesday released the national results for 2012, which for the first time include data for Maori medium education.

Nga Whanaketanga Rumaki Maori figures show 70% of students at Kura Kaupapa or Maori medium schools are writing in Te Reo at or above the standard - which is at the same level as the national standard for writing in English.

However the figure for writing at or above the standard is 10% lower for Maori at mainstream schools.

For reading, or panui, 76% of Maori medium students were at or above the standard last year; while the figure is 68% for Maori in mainstream education.
