Maori focussed health training welcomed

Te Tairawhiti District Health Board's Maori representation is welcoming proposed Maori health training for DHBs.

The Ministry of Health is funding training for staff to improve their knowledge and understanding of Maori health, which could be done online by individuals as self learning.

On top of that, iwi relationship boards, which work with DHBs to represent Maori needs will receive governance training.

Deputy chair of Te Tairawhiti's iwi relationship board Te Waiora o Nukutaimemeha, Lois McCarthy-Robinson, says it is good that DHBs are being compelled to take notice of Maori health inequalities and work to resolve them.

She says 47% of the district is Maori.

Ms McCarthy-Robinson says she hopes the training puts everyone in the DHB on the same page about what needs to be addressed in their district.
