A Tauranga iwi collective says the local council's tribal management plan has been a long time coming.
The Tauranga Moana Tangata Whenua collective is made up of representatives from the 13 sub-tribes and three iwi within the council's boundaries.
Those iwi and hapu can now apply for the council's new $30,000 management plan funding pool, to help them document land use proposals and identify sites of significance.
Chair of the collective, Puhirake Ihaka, says it's about time, after 10 years of submissions from iwi and hapu.
He says there have been various protocols put in place between the council and hapu and iwi, and this is another step forward in formalising the iwi-council relationship.
