The Chief Coronor says Maori have made it clear to him that if suicide isn't talked about then misinformation will continue.
Of the 522 people who died by suicide in 2010, 104 were Maori latest figures from the Ministry of Health show.
Judge Neil MacLean says the suicide rate is high and not showing any significant change.
The judge says suicide is more freely discussed and not a taboo subject. He says it's important the matter is raised, and highlights that young people learn about suicide not through the news but via social media - an area not legally controlled.
Judge MacLean says it's important that, where appropriate, suicide stories are told correctly.
He says Maori wanted to know about the issues and question what they could do to help address the problem, a message he says was raised at a Maori hui on suicide earlier in the year.
