Miraka worried milk scare will affect its supply chain

The Maori-owned dairy company, Miraka, says it is worried that the recall of Fonterra's contaminated milk will damage its reputation.

China and Russia have banned imports of some Fonterra milk powder products after discovering that of 38 tonnes of its whey protein have been contaminated with a bacterium that can cause botulism.

Two Karicare infant formula products have been recalled in New Zealand.

Miraka chief executive Richard Wyeth says it exported approximately 10,000 tonnes of whole milk powder to China last year.

He says it's too early to know what impact the contamination may have on New Zealand, but anything that damages the supply chain will have an impact on Miraka.

He says its products are safe, but it will probably have to carry out tests to reassure its customers.
