Victoria University will soon offer a course in Maori cultural practices for professionals.
The university's head of Maori studies, Peter Adds, says the course will prepare students for entering the workforce with the knowledge and skills to engage with the Maori world and Maori stakeholders.
He says they will be taught Maori greetings, take part in powhiri [welcoming ceremonies] and waiata [songs], and learn how Te Tiriti o Waitangi affects their workplace.
Mr Adds says there is strong demand for these skills, especially in Wellington - much of it coming from staff in government departments, which are trying to become Treaty-compliant.
He says the course will provide a non-threatening environment in which students can ask questions and raise matters for debate.
The inaugural course will run from December 2013 to February 2014.
