Pharmaceutical funding criteria which takes into account the specific health needs of Maori and Pacific people needs to continue, a kaumatua for Pharmac says.
The government's drug-buying agency is hosting a series of community forums to find out public views on what its pharmaceutical funding decision criteria should be.
Pharmac kaumatua Bill Kaua says Pharmac already has criteria which takes into account the specific health needs of Maori and Pacific people, and that needs to continue.
Maori have greater health needs than other New Zealanders, with cardio vascular disease being the biggest killer of Maori and Pacific people, and Maori men dying 14 years earlier than Pakeha men, he says.
Maori attendance at the meetings has been low but there are two more community forums to be held, in Whangarei on August 13 and Hokitika on August 27.
