6:35 am on 23 August 2013

The new cultural co-leader of Te Papa wants to strengthen its links with tangata whenua.

Arapata Hakiwai of Ngati Kahungunu, Rongowhakaata, Ngati Porou and Ngai Tahu has been appointed to the role of kaihautu at the national museum.

He's currently head of Matauranga Maori at Te Papa, mentoring the team involved in Treaty of Waitangi and taonga research.

Mr Hakiwai said he wants to build on the museum's iwi connections and work harder to get more taonga repatriated from overseas.

He said he has seen how uplifting it is for iwi when their taonga are returned.

Mr Hakiwai starts his new job in October.
