Iwi supports Maori Community Development Act review

6:30 am on 5 September 2013

The Far North iwi, Te Rarawa, is supporting a thorough review of the Maori Community Development Act, saying it's archaic and that it no longer serves its intended purpose.

Written in 1962, the original aim of the legislation was to support Maori community development through the Maori Council, committees, wardens and community officers.

Public consultation on the future of the Act is underway with 19 hui scheduled throughout the country over the next three weeks.

Maori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples said the Maori Council will not be disbanded.

Te Rarawa held a hui on Wednesday and chair Haami Piripi said the resolution was to continue to support the Maori Council.

But he said its focus needs a significant change, by better aligning itself institutionally and politically with iwi organisations.
