Iwi incorporations called on to help Maori entrepreneurs

7:02 pm on 5 September 2013

A Maori business advisor, Poutama Trust, is calling on iwi incorporations to invest in Maori entrepreneurs and microbusinesses, which struggle to get capital.

The trust's chief executive Richard Jones says there are a number of Maori innovators who are big on ideas but cash poor.

He says work is being done to connect them with Treaty Settlement organisations, Asset Groups and Land Trusts.

Mr Jones says a collaboration is being piloted between four of its Maori honey producers, Maori land owners and an Iwi Assets Holding Group.

He says many iwi are risk-averse and under scrutiny so tend to stick with more secure investments.
