A Bay of Plenty tribal trust wants the green light from Ngati Rangitihi to go ahead and negotiate its Treaty of Waitangi settlement with the Crown.

Te Mana o Ngati Rangitihi Trust has been engaging with the Crown to seek a mandate from the iwi since 2011.

It's holding several hui nationwide next month in the hope of gaining enough votes from the iwi to represent it.

Trust chairman Graham Pryor said Ngati Rangitihi are strong people who have experienced adversity for generations.

Te Mana was established as a post settlement governance entity for the Central North Island iwi collective forestry settlement.
