The Crown has agreed to pay more than $53 million up front to a group of northern iwi, so they can buy dairy farms.

Negotiators from the Hauraki Collective are still working towards a Treaty of Waitangi settlement, so in the meantime the tribes will receive the money on account to purchase the land.

Owned by state-run Landcorp Farming, Pouarua Dairies has 5000 cows spread over eight farms on the Hauraki plains.

The $53 million will be deducted from the final financial redress amount of up to $100 million.

The Hauraki Collective is made up of five iwi: Ngati Maru, Ngati Paoa, Ngati Tamatera, Ngati Tara Tokanui and Te Patukirikiri.
