Teachers' Council urged to keep Maori representation

6:43 am on 2 October 2013

The Teachers' Council must continue to include Maori teachers as the Government makes changes to the body, says a member of the secondary teachers' union's Maori executive, Te Huarahi.

The Post Primary Teachers Association is holding its annual conference in Wellington, and members are worried the Government will reduce teacher influence on the council, which is responsible for registering teachers and approving teacher training courses.

Te Huarahi member Ameriai Kiriwera said the Government must retain Maori representation on the council.

The Maori community must be reflected because the number of Maori on such boards was less than ever, she said.

Maori teachers were also worried about adequate training for teachers, and support for schools in poor communities.
