More Pacific Island wardens for Auckland

7:20 am on 7 October 2013

More Pacific Island wardens, who fulfil a similar role to Maori wardens, are popping up around Auckland.

The East Auckland Pacific Wardens have launched in the suburb of Glen Innes and is made up of 22 mainly Tongan people from the local church community.

Two thirds of the country's Pacific people live in the Auckland region, making up 14% of its population.

General manager of Maori services for police, Wally Haumaha, says Pacific Island Wardens are set up to look after the well-being of the community, and are part of the Auckland landscape now.

The wardens will go through training and mentoring over the next few weeks.
