A new report by the New Zealand Council for Educational Research has found whanau learning te reo Maori find it difficult to get the right information about how to keep their reo up when moving between educational institutions.
Ka Whanau Mai Te Reo is a three year kaupapa Maori research project - the report released on Wednesday is the first in a series of three to come out of the project.
It focusses on the movement of students between educational institutions, particularly when moving out of Maori language-focussed kura and into English language kura.
The research team suggests some ways of making the transition easier - including learning te reo Maori as a whanau, making long-term whanau reo Maori goals, and clear expectations of what any chosen kura will provide.
